About Ziro

Ziro is the census town in Lower Subansiri district in the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh. It has been a favourite town for World Heritage Site for a number of years now. In a meeting of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) on 12 December 2012 it was shortlisted for inclusion in the Tentative List for further nomination to UNESCO for inscription in the World Heritage Site. The part of the town which is the centre of economic activities and where the administrative offices are located is called as Hapoli or locally known by the Apatanis as “Hao-Polyang”.

It is situated at an altitude of 1500 meters above sea level. The region is rich in rice fields and it is surrounded by mountains that boast of pine trees in great numbers. The wide range of flora and fauna seen here is soul captivating. Cool summers and cooler winters are characteristics of Ziro. Every angle is above perfect and every view is spectacular; no wonder the best of cameras fail to do justice to the hues of Ziro.

 

Place to Visit in and around Ziro

Tarin Fish Farm- Paddy Cultivation Sightseeing

Paddy cultivation is a major occupation in Ziro. Here, two different varieties of rice are grown with one variety of fish in the water.

Shri Sidheshwar Nath Temple

This Shiv Linga is self made having Sfatic as garland naturally which is 25 feet in length and 22 feet in width.

Dolo Mando - Trekking

One of the famous attractions of Ziro, travellers trek to the top of this hillock to view the Hapoli town and old Ziro. This hillock is situated on the western side of Ziro on the Daporijo Road.

Kile Pakho

It works as a view point as the viewers get unique views on both sides. The Ziro plateau on one and the Himalayas on the other.

Talley Valley Wildlife Sanctuary

This 337 sq. km. sanctuary is home to a wide and exotic variety of flora and fauna. The endangered clouded leopards are also found here. The sanctuary has a spectrum of flora as well which includes silver fir trees, ferns, orchids, bamboo and rhododendron.

Meghna Cave Temple

This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is located close to Ziro. The 10 minutes climb up the stairs is completely worth it when you reach the 5000 year old structure at 3000 feet above sea level.

Weather

It may broadly be divided into four seasons in a year:

  1. The cold weather season is from December to February
  2. March to May is the pre-monsoon season of thunderstorms
  3. The south–west monsoon from June to about the middle of October
  4. The second half of October to November, which constitutes the post-monsoon or the retreating monsoon period and is a period of transition

Ways to reach Ziro

Ziro Valley is well connected with all major means of transportation with the other parts of India. However, the most convenient way to reach here would be to take a train to Naharalagun and from there hire a taxi to Ziro.

By Air :

The nearest airport from Ziro is at Jorhat, Assam which is 98 kms away. Another airport is at Lilabari, which is at a distance of 123 kms from Ziro. The nearest international airport of Ziro is at Guwahati at a distance of about 449 kms.

By Rail :

The railway stations from Ziro are at Naharalagun (100 kms) and North Lakhimpur (117 kms). Regular Intercity train from Guwahati and  twice a week train from New Delhi ply to Naharalagun.

By Road :

There is a night bus from Guwahati to Ziro. The bus, operated by the Arunachal Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation runs four days a week. Alternatively, one can travel to North Lakhimpur or Itanagar and take a shared taxi to Ziro from there.

Inner Line Permit

Entry Formalities 

As Arunachal Pradesh falls under restricted area, official permission is required to enter the state. There are two kinds of official permits prescribed by Government for entering into any area within Arunachal Pradesh. They are,
(i) Inner Line Permit (ILP) and

(ii) Protected Area Permit (PAP).

The Inner Line Permits are required by Indians other than natives of Arunachal Pradesh for entering into any place in Arunachal Pradesh. The ILPs are issued by the Issuing authorities of Government of Arunachal Pradesh with offices at Delhi, Kolkata, Tezpur, Guwahati, Shillong, Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur and Jorhat.

All the foreigners are required have the Protection Area Permit or PAP for entering into Arunachal Pradesh. They can obtain the Protected Area Permit from, All Indian Missions abroad, All Foreigners Regional Registration Officers (FRRO) at Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chief Immigration Officer, Chennai, Home Ministry, Govt. of India and Home Commissioner, Govt. of Arunachal Pradesh, Itanagar.

Any Domestic tourist coming to Arunachal Pradesh has to obtain an Inner Line Permit. The Permit is granted as a routine for the tourists and so it should not deter any tourist from coming to Arunachal Pradesh. The Inner Line Permit can be obtained from any of the places given below.

Festival

Dree Festival

The Apatanis, who inhabit a tranquil pine clad valley called Ziro at the core of Lower Subansiri District of Arunachal Pradesh, are famous for their unique practice of wet rice cultivation.They are also known for their sustainable agricultural practices and the agricultural cycles govern their everyday lives. The agricultural festival of Dree is the highlight in this cycle.

During the Dree festival, five main deities are appeased, these are; Tamù, Metẁ, Medvr, Mepiñ and Danyi.

  • Tamu – It is propitiated to ward off the insects and pests.
  • Metii – It is propitiated to ward off epidemics and other ailments of the human beings.
  • Medvr – It is a purification ritual performed to cleanse the agricultural fields of unfavorable elements.
  • Mepin – It is performed to seek blessings for healthy crops and well being of mankind.
  • Danyi – Danyi is also propitiated for fertility of the soil, abundance of aquatic lives in the rice fields, healthy cattle and for prosperity of all human beings.
